Anti-abortion lawmakers have come up with a new way to interfere with reproductive decision making. This time, a handful of senators snuck an abortion coverage ban into legislation designed to support survivors of human trafficking. Shameful.
Just like everyone else, trafficking survivors should have access to the full range of reproductive health services, including abortion care. Yet, due to the political maneuvering of anti-abortion senators, the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 (S. 178) includes a provision that restricts abortion. Taking away someone’s ability to make the best decision for her circumstances isn’t “justice”.
It’s no secret that some politicians in Washington are doing everything they can to make abortion unaffordable and inaccessible. Instead of providing access to safe and affordable medical care, anti-abortion senators are interfering with a trafficking survivor’s ability to get abortion care.
When a woman needs to end her pregnancy, it’s important that she’s able to see a licensed, quality health provider. Let’s not let these politicians play games that jeopardize the health and well-being of those who need our support the most.
Opponents of abortion decided to put an extreme restriction on abortion into bill about human trafficking. Don’t let them push their agenda. Trafficking survivors deserve to have all reproductive health options available to them. http://bit.ly/1b2vxv5 #StriketheBan #JVTA
