Campaign 155 against bride kidnapping (Bishkek Feminist Collective SQ, Women Support Centre, a public association “Dia” and a public foundation “Center of Civil Initiatives”) conducted a meeting in front of the building of Jogorku Kenesh, the Parliament, asking the deputies to make persecution for this type of crime tougher (Men get only up to 3 years of imprisonment for bridekidnapping, while for a stock stealing you can get up to 3 years of imprisonment as well. There’s also a separate article of kidnapping of a person, which states 7 years of imprisonment).

Kloop.KG informational agency interviewed several deputies:
“Bridekidnapping is a truly theft of a human being. I understand that there is such a tradition, it’s an old tradition, it is practised. But then the tradition ceases to tradition, when both parties agree”
- said the deputy from Social Democratic Party Karamushkina
MP from “The Republic” party Mirlan Bakirov, however, believes that 15 thousand soms of fine is enough for stealing a woman to marry against her will and even for sexual violence.

Ak-Suu District Court of the Issyk-Kul region, sentenced a guy to 6 years of imprisonment in early October for bride kidnapping (the girl hang herself the next day after the ritual wedding). According to the Ombudsman, it was the first trial among all cases of bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan that “have been successful.”
I’m happy and proud to say that the campaign 155 was successful! The law bill was approved by the deputies of the Parliament in the second reading (66 deputies voted YES against 12 deputies)! Thanks to everybody, who supported this law bill! Now we have to wait for the third reading, but I guess, the law bill will pass.
