Lots of commentary on the India gang rape case has floated past my computer screens. Even calling it the “India gang rape case” has an eerie, dehumanizing tone to it.
Then I came across this article http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/father-india-rape-victim-identifies-daughter-article-1.1234227 and realized it was the first time I read aloud or saw in print her name.
Her name is Jyoti Singh Pandey.
Learning her name jolted me back to this past December, when the name Kasandra Michelle Perkins was brought to my attention from The Crunk Feminist Collective. …

As a community organizer by day, and night and every other weekend, I’m often invited to fancy-pants events in the name of social change. It’s most certainly a privilege for me to be invited to such spaces where I know I’m representing a whole demographic of people that don’t have the same access. Among many other national and international observances, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer Awareness seems to be everywhere, from the recognition of survivors in my communities to friends who have pledged to walk to fundraise in support. I’ve even noticed, well actually, I’ve a little more than noticed, that businesses are really “excited” about Breast Cancer Awareness month as well.
