YAN 101 FAQ

YAN 101 FAQ

Conceived to help youth activists become even more knowledgeable and conversant in the topics they are working on, YAN 101 is a series of online education modules about topics in adolescent reproductive and sexual health and rights. Young people can become certified Sexual Health and Rights Activists by:

  • Completing each module
  • Submitting a brief essay for the Cultural Competency module
  • Completing the Final Exam with a score of at least 25/30.

All young people involved in Advocates for Youth’s programs must complete the modules, essay, and exam. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at info@advocatesforyouth.org with “Online modules” in the subject line.

How do the modules work?
Click on a module’s title to begin. You will see slides and hear audio about the subject, with interspersed quiz questions about the material. (There is no penalty for wrong answers on the modules; only on the final exam do wrong answers “count.”) Once you have completed the module and questions, you’ll be able to report your results using your name and email. Once you have completed all the required elements for certification (modules, brief essay, and final exam), we will contact you within 7 business days to let you know you’ve passed and get your certificate to you.

Who is issuing this certificate in Sexual Health and Rights Activism?
Advocates for Youth is the organization that has developed and is administering YAN 101 modules and tests. Advocates is a national nonprofit that works with a network of over 25,000 young people to champion policies and programs that support the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people. What if I fail the final exam?
If you don’t get 25 total questions right, you can go back and retake the exam as often as you need. You’ll know which areas you need to work on: as you answer each question, you’ll get a “Correct” or “Incorrect” message. If after 2 attempts (submitted using your name and email address) you are unable to score 25/30, we will contact you to discuss alternatives to the online test.

What if I don’t feel confident writing essays?
Please note that grammar and spelling will not be graded. The essay is intended to help activists gain a fuller understanding of cultural competency by considering very carefully how their background and experiences affect their worldview. We strongly recommend that you answer the essay question as best you can. Once you’ve made an attempt, if we have questions about your answer, we will contact you and explore your ideas verbally.

What if I don’t feel confident taking tests?
You are not penalized for incorrect answers on the test questions on the individual modules. However, on the Final Exam, you must score 25/30 to complete the certification process. Please attempt the test and submit your results. If after 2 attempts you are unable to score 25/30, we will contact you to discuss alternatives to the online test.

I am well-informed on all of these topics. Can I just take the final and skip the modules?
In order to receive a certificate, you must complete all of the modules, submit the cultural competence essay, and complete the final exam (with a score of 25/30).
